Roses
Although we grow hundreds of different kinds of plants in our gardens, our chief love is roses. We have more than 500 healthy and generously abundant rose bushes thriving in the two walled gardens, around 150 different varieties altogether, and we’re always adding to the collection. Many of the roses we grow are those bred by David Austin, for irresistible blooms flowering over a long period, and we have a selection of interesting hybrid tea and floribunda varieties too, especially those with unusual colours or petal formation.
Our favourites, however, are the old and species roses, which come in such a dizzying range of shapes, sizes, habits and colours, and which often have ravishingly beautiful foliage, which is much appreciated by our most discerning florist customers. We begin to pick the first of our roses - the rambling Banksia - at the beginning of May, and the season reaches a crescendo of plenty in mid June, with the gardens continuing to produce roses until around mid October. The selection of images below shows what a surprising range there is on offer. If only pictures could also showcase the decadent scents.
